Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) in Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) refers to the recording of blood pressure when one is moving around, i.e, doing one’s daily activities. The work is done by a small device which is attached to a belt around the patient’s body and connected to a cuff on the arm.
What are the utilities of such monitoring?
- One's blood pressure may appear higher in the clinic, in front of the doctor. This is known as the "White coat effect"
- It can help the doctor understand how well the medicines are working in order to control the blood pressure throughout the day.
- If the blood pressure is found tobe high at home the doctor may optimize the medications.
What is involved in the procedure?
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is when the blood pressure is measured as the person's move around, living the normal daily life. It is measured for up to 24 hours. A small digital blood pressure monitor is attached to a belt around the waist and connected to a cuff around the upper arm.
How are 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure readings taken?
BP readings are taken continually over a 24-hour period. You’ll wear a device that is about the same size as a portable radio. The device is attached to a belt or strap worn on your body. It collects information throughout the 24-hour period that will later be transferred to a computer.
You’ll wear a BP cuff that is attached to the device around your upper arm. (The cuff can be worn under clothing so it isn’t visible.) The cuff inflates at certain intervals throughout the day and night. You may be told to keep a diary to record your daily readings. This can help show how changes in your BP relate to periods of activity or rest.
After 24 hour ,technician will remove the device and BP cuff.. A computer analyzes the readings and generates results.
