A Treadmill test is a cardiac stress test where you will be asked to walk on a treadmill in a controlled environment while your ECG is continuously monitored. The test is useful in diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD). This test also helps your doctor find out how well your heart handles the workload of exercise. 

Who should take this test?

Athletes and individuals who are looking to achieve a level of fitness beyond the regular demands of fitness need to determine if their body can take the kind of pressure they want to exert on it. A Stress test is one way to determine this fitness and capability. The test is conducted on a treadmill.

How is a Stress Test performed?

  • A Stress test requires the patient to run on a treadmill
  • During the Stress test, a technician will put electrodes on the patient's chest and these electrodes will be attached to an ECG machine which monitors heart activity. Blood pressure and heart rate readings are also recorded during the test
  • Patient will be asked to walk on the the treadmill and speed of the machine will increase with the stages.
  • The test will be continued till patient feels exhausted or target heart rate is achieved

What does the Stress Test / Treadmill Stress Test tell you and your doctor?

  • The exercise capacity and the physical endurance that the heart can bear
  • ST-T changes seen during TMT in correlation with patient's symptoms will tell about coronary ischemia

How to prepare for a Stress Test

Though no real preparation is necessary, it is commonly suggested that the patient should have a light breakfast and wear loose clothes and sports shoes. Male patients should shave their chest before the test.
